Supervisors Don Wagner and Janet Nguyen Seek to Clean Voter Rolls of All Dogs
Santa Ana, CA – Supervisors Don Wagner and Janet Nguyen will introduce an emergency agenda item at Tuesday’s Board meeting that directs Registrar Bob Page to investigate, disclose, and remove non-human voter registrations and voting records.
This action follows recent news revealing felony charges against the owner of a dog that was voted in two elections, raising concerns of similar situations due to California’s lax voter registration requirements.
“Amid the ongoing legal battle that our County insists on fighting with the DOJ over the records of 17 noncitizens being found on our voter rolls, it has now been revealed that a dog was registered to vote in two elections, one of which the vote was counted,” said Supervisor Wagner. “Continued revelations of breaches of integrity in our voter rolls raise questions about just how secure they really are and demand a swift and thorough clearing of dead voters, noncitizens, and now, embarrassingly, dogs. We should probably also look into whether cats are voting. As our state is facing a looming special election, the urgency of this thorough cleaning of our rolls is clear.”
“I’m concerned about the upcoming special election. Orange County needs to take this seriously because this dog incident is proof that we need a cleanup here,” Supervisor Janet Nguyen said. “Dirty voter rolls are a real thing – it does happen. In 2019, Los Angeles County settled a lawsuit brought by Judicial Watch to clear 1.6 million ineligible voters from its rolls. By 2023, LA had removed 1.2 million names.”
This agenda item is brought on an emergency basis because news of the voting dog broke late last Friday. Registar Page intends to begin the process of preparing ballots on Wednesday for the upcoming gerrymandering special election.
Supervisors Don Wagner and Janet Nguyen have consistently argued for cleaning up Orange County’s voter rolls. They believe all eligible to voters should have a voice in our elections while ineligible voters should not. That includes dogs.
