Supervisors Don Wagner and Janet Nguyen Condemn Governor Newsom’s Midterm Redistricting Ploy, Costing Orange County Taxpayers Millions

SANTA ANA, Calif. – In response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s special election scheme to gerrymander congressional district lines, Supervisors Don Wagner and Janet Nguyen have condemned this action, citing the sheer cost for Orange County taxpayers.

“Governor Newsom’s off-year special election is going to cost Orange County taxpayers millions of dollars,” said Supervisor Wagner. “Newsom wants us to pay for an election explicitly designed to take the people’s power back from them and to give that power to his political cronies. This will cost the state upwards of $235 million. Gavin and Sacramento elites should focus on fixing California’s many problems, not self-aggrandizing political power grabs. This move is utterly reprehensible.”

Supervisor Janet Nguyen added that this is a ploy by Gov. Gavin Newsom to get publicity for his quest to be President.

“The community needs to rise up against this and say NO. It will cost Orange County $13 million for this special election. It’s a waste of taxpayer dollars and I hope the courts see this scam for what it is. Now that Gov. Newsom wants to be President, he’ll do anything for a headline. No doubt Orange County is on his chopping block because he can’t stand that we have freedom here – look how he targeted us during COVID. He will do anything to control California.”

The target date for the special election announced by Newsom is Nov. 4, 2025. The Orange County Registrar of Voters estimates that this hastily called election will cost Orange County $13 million to conduct, given the limited staff and resources available in an off-election year, as well as the need for a quick turnaround to prepare ballots.
