Statement from Chairman Don Wagner on OCFA Firefighter Vehicle Rollover

Orange County, CA – Last night, at 6:50pm, a tragic vehicle rollover involving Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) firefighters occurred on the Northbound 241 freeway, just north of Portola, as Crew 1 was concluding its 12-hour shift after battling the Airport Fire. Eight OCFA firefighters sustained injuries in this accident, caused by debris on the freeway.

First responders arrived on the scene promptly at 6:57 PM, including nine paramedic units and twelve ambulances. Three helicopters were also deployed to ensure rapid medical assistance for the injured. Six of the firefighters were transported to local trauma centers, with three taken to Mission Hospital, two to OC Global, and one to UCI, while two others were taken in stable condition to Hoag Irvine.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured firefighters and their families during this incredibly difficult time,” said Chairman Wagner. “We extend our deepest gratitude to these brave men and women for their selfless service and dedication to our community. The risks they take every day to protect us are immeasurable, and we are thankful for their courage.”

“We also want to recognize the swift actions of the rescue workers who responded to the scene,” continued Chairman Wagner. “Their professionalism and rapid response ensured that our firefighters received the care they needed without delay. As Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and a member of the OCFA Board of Directors, I assure you that we are here to provide whatever is needed for our firefighters and their loved ones after this tragic accident.”

In light of this traumatic incident, our crews are undergoing a formal critical incident stress debriefing to support their emotional well-being as they process the gravity of this event. The safety and health of our firefighters are of utmost importance, and the County of Orange will continue to provide support to them and their families.

Chairman Wagner will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide any necessary resources to aid in their recovery.
